I have an inscribed watch commemorating his long ser 2 CONC vice at Broadley's. 2 CONT 2 CONT He married my mother at the outset of the Second World War. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was a gunner in the Royal Artillery in the war and manned anti aircraft guns around Britai 2 CONC n's coast. He mentioned serving at Stiffkey, Norfolk, close to the birth place of his grandmo 2 CONC ther Susannah Rowe. He was a little deaf in later life, probably due to the effect of the noi 2 CONC se from the big guns. 2 CONT 2 CONT We holidayed at Wells next the Sea in the early sixties, perhaps my father remembered it fro 2 CONC m the war. 2 CONT 2 CONT He loved walking on the hills around Rossendale and often made kites and other toys for my br 2 CONC other and I when we were very young. 2 CONT 2 CONT He always left the house at 7:15 in the morning and had a lift in a friends car - I believe h 2 CONC e started work each day at 7:30 and didn't finish till 5:30 in the afternoon and for years h 2 CONC e worked Saturday mornings. He never learned to drive as we were never able to afford a car 2 CONC . We finally had a telephone installed in the mid 60's so that I could call home from Cable a 2 CONC nd Wireless locations around the world. 2 CONT 2 CONT My father had an interest in radio and television which I inherited. We had a Barker 88 valv 2 CONC e radio and he and I experimented with early stereo transmissions where the left channel wa 2 CONC s the radio signal and the right channel came from the television. I remember buying a colou 2 CONC r television for the household on one of my return visits around 1973 - I think this was th 2 CONC e first colour television we had. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was a heavy smoker throughout his life and eventually died of lung cancer in 1975. The cor 2 CONC rosive atmosphere in the plastic works no doubt also took it's toll. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 Jan 2007 3 TIME 12:51:33 0 @I5@ INDI 1 NAME Edna May /Goldsworthy/ 2 SURN Goldsworthy 2 GIVN Edna May 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 19 Aug 1916 2 PLAC Stacksteads, Lancashire 2 SOUR @S23@ 3 PAGE Entry Number 301 3 NOTE REGISTRATION DISTRICT Haslingden 1916 BIRTH in the Sub-district of Bacup in the County of La 4 CONC ncaster 4 CONT 4 CONT CERTIFIED to be a true copy of an entry in the certified copy of a Register of Births in th 4 CONC e Districe above mentioned. 4 CONT 4 CONT Given at the GENERAL REGISTER OFFICE, under the Seal of the said Office, the 15th day of Apri 4 CONC l 2004 3 DATA 4 DATE 11 Jan 2007 1 DEAT 2 DATE 4 Nov 1988 2 PLAC Rawtenstall, Lancashire 1 BURI 2 DATE 1988 2 PLAC Burnley, Lancashire 2 SOUR @S31@ 1 _UID 60B438496B36614B8385B652A0B91389E707 1 FAMS @F2@ 1 FAMC @F3@ 1 NOTE My mother worked in the factories of the Rossendale Valley for her entire life. 2 CONT 2 CONT Before the Second World War, she worked at Ingham's box works. 2 CONT 2 CONT She married my father at the outset of the Second World War, and then went to work in the amm 2 CONC unition factory at Haslingden 2 CONT 2 CONT After the war, she worked at Hurst's slipper works near Waterfoot, until she retired at the e 2 CONC nd of the Sixties 2 CONT 2 CONT With her sister Alice, she was the last of the Cornish Goldsworthy's in our branch of that fa 2 CONC mily. 2 CONT 2 CONT She lived the early part of her life in Whitwell Bottom, and her father was a strict discipli 2 CONC narian. As a result o 2 CONC f this agricultural workers migrated to other industries for work. This migration was hindere 2 CONC d by the old systems of ‘outdoor relief’ for the poor, poor methods of transport, and ignora 2 CONC nce. The Poor Law Commissioners appointed Migration Agents in Lancashire and Yorkshire to fin 2 CONC d work and homes for the unemployed to move to. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1826 there were Luddite riots when machines were attacked and wrecked because they were se 2 CONC en to be taking worker's jobs. In 1830 there was a Labourers Revolt in central and eastern En 2 CONC gland which was brutally put down. The scheme to help migrant workers came to an end in 183 2 CONC 7 when there was a collapse in trade. 2 CONT 2 CONT During the period 1835-36 many families were moved under the direction of the Migration Agent 2 CONC s from central and eastern England by canal to Lancashire, where families would be contracte 2 CONC d to a specific employer. Examples of wages in a mill at that time were: 2 CONT 2 CONT Father: 10 shillings per week rising to 15 shillings afte 2 CONC r 3 years 2 CONT Children aged 16-20: 5 shillings per week rising to 6 shillings 2 CONT Child aged 13: 4 shillings and 6 pence to 5 shillings 2 CONT Child aged 12: 4 shillings to 4 shillings and 6 pence 2 CONT Child aged 9: 1 shilling and 6 pence 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Initially the accommodation for these workers was tents and Mary Anne Rowe recalled instituti 2 CONC onal accommodation in small uniform dwellings with basic furniture. By 1862, with the America 2 CONC n Civil War in full swing, the supply of raw cotton for the mills dried up and there was wide 2 CONC spread destitution. Manchester newspapers of the time were full of appeals to help the destit 2 CONC ute. Soup kitchens were opened in Manchester and the Town Council appealed for extra police o 2 CONC fficers to stop vagrants streaming into Manchester from the Rossendale Valley. 2 CONT 2 CONT With the end of the Civil War cotton supplies resumed and the mill owners sent their agents o 2 CONC ut to recruit labour. Binham in Norfolk was a particularly successful area for them and Joh 2 CONC n Rowe took his family to Rossendale around 1867. 2 CONT 2 CONT Whilst living in Norfolk it is said that on one occasion John killed a sheep to feed his fami 2 CONC ly. He avoided detection by hiding the carcass in a local river. On the Poor Law Returns fo 2 CONC r 1855 and 1862 John is shown as occupying a cottage owned by Charles Powell. 2 CONT 2 CONT John was recruited by an agent for the Sunnyside Print Works which was described in 1860 as ' 2 CONC Print works, new bleaching shop, drying room, stewing place, Cimbric place, finishing singein 2 CONC g, new madder, plating, edging, white rooms, dyehouse and reservoir' which suggests that it w 2 CONC as the biggest employer in the area. 2 CONT 2 CONT By 1876 Thomas Brooks of Butterworth & Brooks (owners of the Sunnyside Print Works) was a sto 2 CONC ne merchant, calico printers and bleachers based at Crawshaw Hall, They were also tenants o 2 CONC f stone quarries at Crawshawbooth and Bonfire Hill which were owned by the Duke of Buccleuch. 2 CONT 2 CONT The church played a very important part in the lives of the Rowe and Swindells families as we 2 CONC ll as most of the community. From the Sunday School Minute Book 1872/84 of Sunnyside Primitiv 2 CONC e Methodist Chapel are recorded: 2 CONT 2 CONT Sunday, 11th May 1879 2 CONT 400 Hymn sheets in the afternoon, 600 in the evening. (This indicates that Sunnyside Chapel was on land pr 2 CONC ovided by the Brooks family, who were also employer and landlord.) 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1871 John lived in a cottage at Rake Bottom where he paid rent of £3 18s 0d per annum. Dur 2 CONC ing that year he moved to a house nearby where the rent was £7 12s 0d per annum. Later he mov 2 CONC ed to a cottage at 'Top o' th Pinner' where he had to pay £5 4s 0d per annum. By 1892 he had moved to a house a 2 CONC t 4 Hill Street for which he paid Messrs Brooks £7 0s 0d pa rent. At that time most of the ho 2 CONC uses in Pinner Lane were empty and they have since been demolished. 2 CONT 2 CONT By 1892 Susannah was a widow living at 9 Back Hill Street at a rent of £6 0s 0d pa and rate 2 CONC s of l/4d in the pound, in another house owned by Messrs Brooks. At the time money was tigh 2 CONC t for her and she was 8 shillings in arrears with the rent. 2 CONT 2 CONT When Susannah's children attended Rakefoot Methodist Sunday School in 1870 it had a staff o 2 CONC f 21 men teachers, 13 women teachers and 6 reserves. She had a son James born in 1870 in Craw 2 CONC shaw Booth. 2 CONT 2 CONT John rose to become foreman colorist at Langworthy's of Salford. He is buried at All Saints Church, Wing. 2 CONT 2 CONT Entry from The Times, Monday March 15 1841 2 CONT NORFOLK CIRCUIT, AYLESBURY FRIDAY MARCH 12 Before the Lord Chief Justice TINDAL 2 CONT Henry FRYER, aged 21, was indicted for wilfully setting fire to the dwelling house of one Geo 2 CONC rge HONER, on the 15th October, 1840. 2 CONT Mr BYLES prosecuted, and Mr Sydney TAYLOR defended the prisoner. 2 CONT The prosecutor [ie George Honer] was at the time of the occurrences which gave rise to this p 2 CONC rosecution, for he is since dead, a farmer living at Wing, near this town. By much industry a 2 CONC nd frugality he had saved sufficient money to purchase the house in which he resided and thre 2 CONC e others adjoining, which were let to divers tenants. The prisoner had been lodging in his ho 2 CONC use since the summer of 1839. The prosecutor slept in a room up stairs which lay through th 2 CONC e prisoner's, and in that room he kept in a box the title-deeds of his estate and his money 2 CONC . The prisoner might see this box when the door between the two bedrooms chanced to be open 2 CONC . About 7 o'clock in the evening of the 15th of October, the prosecutor was returning from "s 2 CONC eeing his pigs safe a bed" when he met the prisoner running across his yard in the utmost hur 2 CONC ry. He asked the prisoner what was the matter, and the man answered "he was very ill within s 2 CONC ide," and he then ran to the privy. The prosecutor advised him to take some brandy, and wen 2 CONC t into his own house. As he was going up stairs a man came running in calling "Fire" whereupo 2 CONC n the prosecutor came down again, and saw his barn, which stood at the end of the yard, i 2 CONC n a blaze. When he saw this disaster he ran back into his bedroom to secure the box in whic 2 CONC h his title-deeds and money were stowed, when he was immediately followed by the prisoner, wh 2 CONC o caught him at the top of the stairs, collared him, and insisted upon his leaving the house 2 CONC , "or he would be burnt alive." The old man, however, (for he was 85) struggled and got away 2 CONC , and going to his box found the hasp of it broken, and one of the hinges forced off. Wit 2 CONC h a trembling and an anxious hand he opened this repository of his treasures, and then discov 2 CONC ered that all, both parchment and gold, were gone. Eleven sovereigns had been stolen. A polic 2 CONC eman at this time came up stairs, and found the old man, sitting upon his rifled box, bewaili 2 CONC ng his loss, and saying "he was undone for ever; his money was gone, and he'd as lief be burn 2 CONC t as not, now." The fire continued to rage, and ultimately the whole of the prosecutors prope 2 CONC rty, except one end of his own dwelling, was consumed. As soon as the fire had spent itself 2 CONC , several people, amongst whom was the prisoner, had assembled at the village alehouse to dis 2 CONC cuss the disastrous occurences of the evening. The prisoner complained of having received a 2 CONC n injury to his head, and forthwith fell into a state which the bystanders thought was a fit 2 CONC . They had great difficulty in holding him down, and the village doctor was sent for. As soo 2 CONC n as he had arrived, he said he must cut off the prisoner's hair as the first step to recover 2 CONC ing him from his "fit" whereupon the prisoner opened his eyes and declared that his hair shou 2 CONC ld not be touched. This naturally excited the suspicions of the surgeon, who asked him severa 2 CONC l questions, to none of which did he receive any answer. The doctor then felt his pulse, whic 2 CONC h he found regular and healthy, and his opinion was, that the prisoner, though for what motiv 2 CONC e he could not divine, was shamming an illness. He was put to bed and his pockets searched, a 2 CONC nd in them was found a lucifer match box without any matches in it, a file, and a pair of pin 2 CONC cers. With respect to the former, it appeared by the evidence of the village chandler that ab 2 CONC out quarter of an hour before the discovery of the fire the prisoner had purchased at his sho 2 CONC p a box of lucifer matches, containing about 50. The box when found in his pocket after the f 2 CONC ire was, as abovementioned, empty. With respect to the file and pincers, it appeared upon exa 2 CONC mining the old man's box that it had been forced or attempted to be forced open with some suc 2 CONC h instrument as the former, and marks were left both on the lid and on the body of the box ex 2 CONC actly corresponding with the size and marks of the file so found. These were the main feature 2 CONC s of this mysterious case. 2 CONT Mr S Taylor addressed the jury in a long speech on the part of the prisoner; and the 2 CONT Lord Chief Justice minutely summed up the evidence, commenting as he proceeded upon the leadi 2 CONC ng features of the case. 2 CONT The jury deliberated for half an hour, and then returned a verdict acquitting the prisoner 1 CHAN 2 DATE 23 Jan 2007 3 TIME 17:10:14 0 @I96@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth /Honour/ 2 SURN Honour 2 GIVN Elizabeth 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1778 2 PLAC Wing, Buckinghamshire 1 CHR 2 DATE 15 Feb 1778 2 PLAC Wing, Buckinghamshire 2 SOUR @S129@ 3 PAGE Film Number 1042446 3 DATA 4 DATE 24 Jan 2007 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1863 2 PLAC Wing, Buckinghamshire 1 BURI 2 DATE 16 Mar 1863 2 PLAC Wing, Buckinghamshire 2 SOUR @S129@ 3 PAGE Film Number 1042446 3 DATA 4 DATE 17 Jan 2007 1 _UID 25E08758809A584DBFF5640F57D31F3346A1 1 FAMS @F6@ 1 FAMC @F38@ 1 NOTE Elizabeth is shown in the 1851 Census as age 75 living in High Street, Wing.
